5. Essay (4 pages)

What is a functional term? What relevance does the concept of functional terms have for ethics? Discuss this topic with explicit reference to Sophocles & Aristotle.

What does Aristotle mean by εὐδαιμονία (eudaimonia)? How is his theory of virtues related to this concept? What content does he give to this concept?

Socrates says that an unexamined life is not worth living. What kind of examination of oneÕs life would Aristotle recommend that one undertake?

Discuss the dilemmas presented in the Antigone, the Philoctetes, &  the Euthyphro. Include consideration of their implicit application of functional concepts to human life & conduct, the problems they raise, and the resources for the resolution of these problems offered by Sophocles, Socrates, & Aristotle.
