Final Examination

 

 

On the final examination, you will be required to answer some of the following questions. I will choose which questions will be on the examination. Your answers should be clear and organized and written in a way that would make what you say clear to a person who had not been in class or read the assigned material.

 

1. Definitions

 

(There will be no questions of this type on this examination.)

 

2. Distinctions (1-2 pages)—What is the distinction? Why does the author make it?

 

Animal appetite & human will

Images & concepts

Three acts of the intellect (Adler)

Moderate materialism and moderate immaterialism (Adler)

Dualism and materialistic monism

 

3. Arguments (1-2 pages)—State the argument with explicitly indicated premises and conclusions. Then say informally why the author thinks it is true.

 

MillÕs argument for determinism

PeirceÕs argument against determinism (any one)

DarwinÕs argument that man & animal differ only in degree of intelligence

AdlerÕs argument that man & animal differ in kind

AquinasÕ argument for the incorruptibility of the soul

 

4. Essays (4 pages)

 

Compare & contrast the view on man & animals taken by the Aristotelians (Aristotle, Aquinas, and Adler) and Darwin.

Compare & contrast the views on the will and free choice found in Searle, Mill, Peirce and the Aristotelians.
