Dali and Disney

1. Photojournalism

Although the image looks like a pose, the rough lighting and the distracted looks on the faces of Dali and Walt Disney give it the appearance of a news photo. Remember that we identify an image as falling in a certain genre because we recognize a common structure with other images. That structure serves as a special code related to such things as technique, production values and the medium itself.

Advertisement for Ray-Ban sunglasses uses black and white photography of a supposedly unplanned scene to mimic the conventions of photojournalism.

But remember that the creator of a media text can manipulate these techniques so that an image appears to belong to a genre when it might be something else. The image in the ad at right was carefully made to look like a news photo.
