Elements of mise en scène: Color
The use of color is part of careful production design and is affected by lighting. Color directs the eye and creates a center of attention.
The Wizard of Oz took advantage of the newness of color film to emphasize the dream-like, supersaturated colors of Oz, contrasted with the sepia tone used to represent Dorothy’s life in Kansas. This remains one of the most obvious uses of color as a signifier.
