Tonal montage: Looking within the frame
Tonal montage is based on the “emotional sound” of the scene, in Eisenstein’s words. Such things as lighting take on more importance. Often an object in a shot will direct the eye. Faces take on importance.
In the next clip, from The Battleship Potemkin (1925), the ship is preparing to be attacked by the Russian fleet. The tension is of a lower strain than in the Odessa Steps sequence but still powerful.
