Intellectual montage: A clash of meaning

Again, Vertov’s use of montage forces us to consider elements of society that he sees as competing: the woman getting a manicure while another woman works as a film editor.

Vertov’s montages require much of the viewer. The transitions come quickly and involve radical shifts from scene to scene, meaning that from one shot to the next, the viewer is looking at entirely different people and places. The viewer must provide closure, connecting the shots into a meaningful whole.
