Type-fitting chart

To determine the average number of characters per line of type:

  1. Determine the width of the lowercase alphabet in points. This is easily done using InDesign by typing the alphabet in a text box, adjusting the size, then reducing the width of the text box until the alphabet just fits.
  2. Read down the left-hand column to find your alphabet width. The BOLD numbers indicate the acceptable range of characters per line. The RED numbers indicate the ideal number of characters per line
  3. Go up to the top row to find the desired column width in picas.

In printed matter a range of 40 to 75 characters per line is considered acceptable; the ideal characters per line is about 65.
