Maximilian of Austria

The war continues

Unfortunately this victory was short lived for Mexico. Upon hearing the bad news, Napoleon sent more troops overseas. A year and 30,000 troops later, Mexico City had been taken by France and Maximilian of Austria had been named its ruler.

Although Maximilian organized the administration, liberated the Indians from servitude and developed the natural resources of the country, he was unable to avoid the opposition of Mexican patriots.

The republicans, led by Benito Juarez, went north and requested assistance from the Californians and other Mexican-American societies to help them. Finally on May 15, 1867, Maximilian was overthrown and captured. He was tried by court martial and executed by a firing squad on June 19.
