Roasting coffee

Coffee beans must be roasted before they
can be consumed. Retailers usually buy
coffee directly from roasters, but now many
specialty stores are roasting their own beans.

Retailers typically purchase packaged coffee from roasters, although an increasing number of retailers are now roasting their own beans for sale. The Specialty Coffee Association of America estimates that 10,000 cafés and 2,500 stores sell specialty coffee.

Supermarkets and traditional retail chains remain the primary channel for both specialty and non-specialty coffee. These types of stores sell about 60 percent of the market share of total coffee sales. The coffee that is created throughout each step of this chain serves more than 130 consumers in the United States.
