Fair trade criteria for roasters and importers
For roasters and importers to meet fair trade criteria, they must meet several qualifications according to FLO. These qualifications are:
- The beans used must have been purchased at $1.26 per pound.
- The roaster or importer must give the coffee farmer access to credit facilities at the beginning of the harvest season, for up to 60 percent of the value of the contracted coffee at fair trade conditions, at regular international interest rates.
- Relations between producers and importers or roasters should be based on long-term contracts, usually anywhere from one to 10 years.
