Fair Trade Facts: Fair trade in Minnesota

Fair trade at specialty stores

Throughout the Twin Cities area, there are several specialty coffee shops that offer fair trade products.

Amore Coffee

Amore Coffee, located at 917 Grand Ave., is the only St. Paul coffee shop to win the 2005 Golden Cup of Excellence. The shop serves fair trade coffee roasted by a local company.

Anodyne Coffeehouse

Anodyne, located at 4301 Nicollet Ave. in Minneapolis, serves a custom blend of fair trade, certified organic espresso roasted by Peace Coffee. Anodyne also serves tea, cocoa, pastries, cookies, soups, salads and sandwiches. Open since 1996, the store describes itself as “an architecturally curious community spot.”

Artists’ Grind

The Artists’ Grind serves fair trade, organic and pure-filtered coffee. It is located midway between St. Paul and Minneapolis, near the University of Minnesota, at 2399 University Ave. The coffee house doubles as an art gallery, hosting its own shows.

Coffee Eclectic

Celebrating its second anniversary, Coffee Eclectic exclusively offers fair trade, organic products. The shop aspires to be a “neighborhood gathering spot for all kinds of people,” according to the café’s proprietors. Events at the café, located at 3445 Cedar Ave. in Minneapolis, include free 15-minute chair massages and a knitting and crocheting group.

Ginkgo Coffeehouse

Ginkgo Coffeehouse offers many different fair trade varieties for slightly more than its other specialty coffee drinks. The coffeehouse, located at 721 Snelling Ave. in St. Paul, also offers coffee from San Lucas, Guatemala. Independent farmers there earn more by selling their coffee themselves than selling through fair trade. Only the highest quality coffee is sold as a part of this crop. Ginkgo Coffeehouse sells San Lucas coffee in bulk as whole bean or ground. This coffee is roasted by fair trade certified Alakef Coffee Roasters and is shipped to the store overnight to maintain freshness.

Trotter’s Café and Bakery

Trotter’s Café and Bakery serves fair trade coffee roasted by Peace Coffee. The café also serves organic food made fresh daily without additives or preservatives. Trotter’s supports environmentally-friendly practices. You’ll get a discount if you bring your own cup. The café is located at 232 Cleveland Ave. in St. Paul.

White Rock Coffee Roasters

White Rock Coffee Roasters sells fair trade and organic coffee, available freshly roasted directly in the store or as specialty drinks purchased in the café area. White Rock also sells its beans online. The store is located at 769 Cleveland Ave. in St. Paul.
