Electronic Requirements: You will need access to a computer with a browser and, of course, connection to the World Wide Web. You may use computers at St. Thomas or use your own computer at home. You will need a sound player on your computer to play mp3 files. The files may be downloaded to an iPOD or similar player or used online.
Tests:
Beginning with the third class session there will be a quiz
every class day.The quizzes will be averaged at mid-semester time and will constitute
the mid-semester grade. Quizzes will be averaged againat the end of the semester
and that average will constitute the final grade. The lowest 2 quizzzes in each
half semester will be dropped before the averaging. There will be no mid-term
examination. Tests missed will be graded
as F. Make-up tests are given only for serious illness or family emergency.
Absence Policy: You are encouraged to be present for all class meetings.
Assuming that learning is your objective, your objective will be best met by
attending class and participating actively. There is no penalty for absence
per se, but note above that missed tests will be graded as F and have a negative
effect on your final grade.
Learning a new language:
Learning a new language can be an exciting and fun experience.The study techniques in language learning though are rather different than many subjects you have had in the past. The instructor will assist you in learning an effective style for this kind of study. An important first step is to study on a daily basis rather than attempting to concentrate study before tests. It is for that reason that this class will have daily quizzes rather than large periodic tests. Another important technique is (strange as it may sound): relax and enjoy! Language learning involves developing natural linguistic responses to theworld around us, developing such responses is best accomplished in a relaxed environment. When you see each other outside of class, enjoy using a new means of communication. This makes the learning experience more real and fun and assists you in makingthe language a natural part of yourself.
