Romano Guardini was born on February 17, 1885 in Verona. His family moved to Mainz, Germany in 1886 where Romano grew up. He studied at the universities of Tübingen, Munich and Berlin before deciding to enter the priesthood. He was ordained in Mainz in 1910. He taught at the University of Berlin until forced from his position by the Nazi government in 1939. After the war he entered academic life again, teaching at Tübingen and Munich. He died in 1968. His work was much respected by Josef Ratziner (later Pope Benedict XVI).
