April 23, 1858  Birth of Max Planck in Kiel, Germany.  Planck was a German physicist,  famous as the originator of quantum theory. Planck postulated that energy is radiated in small, discrete units, which he called quanta. The energy of each quantum, he discovered, is equal to the frequency of the radiation multiplied by a universal constant, now known as Planck's constant. His discoveries did not overturn the theory that radiation is emitted in waves, and physicists now believe that electromagnetic radiation combines the properties of both waves and particles. Planck's work formed the basis of a new field of physics, known as quantum mechanics. Planck received the 1918 Nobel Prize in physics. 

Der 23. April ist Max Plancks Geburtstag.  Max Planck war Physiker und Professor an der Universität Kiel und arbeitete ab 1889 an der Universität Berlin. Seit 1912 wurde er ständiger Präsident der deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Max Planck erhielt für seine Verdienste 1918 den Nobelpreis für Physik. Er ist der Begründer der Quantentheorie, deren Entwicklung eine neue Aera in der Physik und Chemie einleitete. Eine der wichtigsten deutschen Forschungseinrichtungen Deutschlands, das Max-Planck-Institut, trägt heute seinen Namen.
