Ingrid Matthäus-Maier (1945 - )

The political leader, Ingrid Matthäus was born in Werlte, Germany on September 9, 1945. She studied law at the Universities of Gießen and Münster. In 1972 she was the chairperson of the Jungdemokraten (youth organization of the SPD party), the first woman to chair a youth organization of a political party. From 1973 through 1982 she was a member of the national committee of the FDP party. In 1982 she joined the SPD party and served as a member of the SPD national committee until 1999. She was elected to the German Parliament (Bundestag) in 1976. She was elected again to the parliament in 1983 as a member of the SPD party. From 1988 to 1999 she was the vice president of the SPD parliamentary caucus. She left the parliament in 1999 and joined the KfW bank group. She left that career in 2008 in the wake of the sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2007 – 2008.

She is married to the mathematician, Robert Maier and bears his name with her birth name, Matthäus-Maier. The couple has two children, Helen, 1978 and Robert, 1980.

Sie studierte Rechtswissenschaft in Gießen und Münster und war bis 1976 als Verwaltungsrichterin in Münster tätig. Von 1966 bis 1969 beschäftigte sie sich mit Hochschulpolitik im Studentenparlament und war Mitglied der Humanistischen Union und Humanistischen Studenten-Union. 1969 trat sie in die FDP. ein. Im Jahre 1972 wurde sie Bundesvorsitzende der Jungdemokraten. Nach dem Koalitionswechsel trat sie aus der FDP. aus und wurde im Dezember 1982 Mitglied der SPD. Von 1976 bis 2. Dezember 1982 und ab 1983 ist Matthäus-Maier Mitglied des Bundestages. Seit November 1979 ist sie als Vorsitzende des Finanzausschusses tätig und seit September 1988 ist sie stellvertretende Vorsitzende der SPD-Fraktion. NN
