Constanze Mozart (1762 Ð 1842)  (Born: Weber)

Constanze Weber was born on January 5, 1762 in Wiesental,Germany.  Her father was the half-brother of Carl Maria von WeberÕs father.  The three Weber daughters, Aloysia, Josepha and Constanze were musically talented and trained vocalists.  The Weber  family was living in Mannheim, Germany when the young prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, met them in 1777.

The Weber family moved to Vienna in 1779. In 1781 Mozart too moved to Vienna.  ConstanzeÕs mother had opened a boarding house in Vienna after the death of her husband.  In May of 1781 Mozart took a room at the Weber boarding house.  The amorous young man was soon attracted to Constanze and would court her through 1782 when the couple married.  Mozart addressed his wife by the loving nickname, Stanzerl.  The couple would have six children, Raimund, Carl,Johann, Theresia, Anna and Franz.  Only Carl and Franz lived beyond childhood.  Franz Xavier became a composer.  Carl also studied music, but gave it up and became a civil servant.

Wolfgang Mozart died in 1791 whereupon ConstanzeÕs latent business skills came to the fore. She organized concerts of MozartÕs music and arranged to have a number of his compositions published.  In 1809 she married the Danish diplomat, Georg von Nissen.  The couple lived in Copenhagen for a time and finally settled in Salzburg in 1824. They worked together to write a biography of Wolfgang Mozart.  Constanze published the work in 1828 after her second husbandÕs death. Constanze Mozart died on March 6, 1842 in Salzburg.
