August 30, 1928

Death of Wilhelm Wien in Munich, Germany. Gaffken was a physicist at the universities of Giessen and Munich who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1911. The Nobel Prize was given for his work on a displacement law related to radiation by a blackbody.

August 30, 1941

The German siege of Leningrad begins in WWII.

August 30, 1948

Death of Alice Salomon in New York City (born in Berlin). Salomon was one of the first women to earn a doctorate at the University of Berlin. Her 1906 doctoral dissertation approached the problem of women earning less for the same work than men. She established Germany's first school of social work. She was one of the founders of the International Congress of Women in 1920. When Hitler came to power she was forced to leave Germany and came to the United States where she remained until her death in 1948.

August 30, 1976

Death of Paul Felix Lazarsfeld in Vienna, Austria. Lazarsfeld was educated at, and for a time taught at, the University of Vienna. He immigrated to the United States in 1933. In the U.S. he was first employed at Princeton University and later at Columbia where he became the director of the Bureau of Applied Social Research. He did extensive research into the impact of radio on voting patters as well as on the impact of newspapers, magazines and movies.
